45Guide on How to Make THC Distillates
Cannabis concentrates are formed from THC distillates that are becoming more famous at our Canada weed dispensary, as they offer a way to get the most volume of THC for your money. THC distillates lead the pack as the most varied option of cannabis products; not only can you use it in edibles, but you can also vape, smoke and even dab THC distillates.
If you grow marijuana plants at home, you may consider taking your THC distillates at home. In this guide, we’ll guide you on making THC distillate and discussing whether it’s worthwhile to try and make it yourself.
How THC Distillates are Made
On making THC Distillates, you don’t need a solvent, unlike other concentrates in the market. Instead, you can use one of the two listed below with similar processes:
- Short path distillation
- Or, short path wiped film distillation.
THC short path distillation takes advantage of THC evaporates much faster than other substances like waxes, sugars, and chlorophyll. This process is quite complicated, but the basic principle as follows:
- First is to create a THC extract by mixing ground-up cannabis flowers with a solvent such as ethanol, which has a low boiling point.
- This solution is then heated to the point where the terpenes and flavonoids are turned into steam. This steam is then cooled into a condensate and collected in a cooled tube, which leads to a collection tank.
- The temperature of the boiling solution is raised again, forcing the cannabinoids to evaporate. This steam is then allowed to pass through a cooled tube, where it condenses into the cannabinoid fraction.
- Collected and used as mixed with the terpenes and flavonoids to restore some flavour and odour to the distillate.
This method is called short path distillation because the condensation vessel sits inside the evaporation chamber, giving the vapour the shortest path possible into the condenser.
How to Make THC Distillates at Home
You need the following equipment if you want to make THC distillates at home; here’s a complete list of things you need:
Supplies needed to make THC distillates:
- Flasks
- Bunsen burner
- Thermometer
- Tubing
- Vacuum to help the steam move through the condensation tube
- Collection flasks
- Ethanol
- A cannabis grinder to make your initial extraction
Simple Short Path Distillation System
The simple short path distillation system will set you back around $3000. That’s if you deal with a reputable lab supplier for your equipment. You can rig some of the equipment yourself with parts you at home. But the results you achieve will vary significantly from batch to batch. Also, a pre-made system will be much easier to use. Not only that, you might find it much less frustrating to set up.
If you’re looking to produce a higher quality THC distillate, consider the alternative to the simple short path distillation system, the short path wiped film distillation process.
The main difference between the two methods is that the evaporator vessel has a rotating wiper blade that smears the extract on the evaporator walls in the wiped film distillation process. It allows for the extract to come into contact with the heat, allowing the cannabinoids to evaporate.
While the short path wiped film distillation system is more efficient than the short path system, it also costs considerably more. Depending on the setup, a comprehensive plan will start at around $5000. Conceivably, its costs could go into the tens of thousands of dollars as you move to higher throughput systems.
